Just a comments re. your DMZ bullet "During trench warfare it was the area between the two trenches – bad metaphor". It's even worse than that, the DMZ in military terms is the zone between two adversaries where there's no military activity at all. The area between two trenches is called no man's land.

It's ironic because the Internet should be no man's land, the DMZ the trench full of soldiers :)
