The 'this is me' phenomenon

Well there are probably a hundred reasons, however the one that strikes me as the most obvious is the need for people to differentiate themselves. When our parents were yound this wasn't so important as communities were smaller, but now we have the Internet and we interact in a worldwide community. It started with things like ringtones, but that wasn't enough. People want other people to know 'the real me'. So they publish every aspect of their lives to the internet, right up to participating in a massive markting dream such as orkut just so that they can have people know more about them. From having someone remember their birthday to knowing that they are somehow important because they are 2 degrees away from Brad Pitt. Who honestly cares what music you have been listening to for the last month, apart from the RIAA? Well just incase someone does have a look at audioscrobbler.
